Just days after Universal Subtitles post a bundle of new updates to their site with a new video to explain it all, the Participatory Culture Foundation also unleash a new front page. If you want to see the start of distributed/collaborative/hive subtitling systems, it’s right here.
Unfortunately the TED Open Translation Project is not quite subtitling – volunteers are sent a spot list to translate – this is not an in browser experience like Universal Subtitles. The TED model will lead to a higher quality translation – each is vetted first. Despite this, I think that Universal Subtitles will prove to be a more successful model – open translation has worked for countless software projects, including Facebook.
