My generation grew up watching Star Wars well before we had even thought about multilingual futures or careers, which puts us in a fascinating situation. The clowns/jokers of the Star Wars trilogy were the robots R2D2 and C3PO, the characters that children would gravitate too immediately. And C3PO was a protocol droid, specialising in human-cyborg relations and speaking over 6 million languages. A robot that could translate – we grew up with it, it is a normalised concept for at least my generation and younger, not the challenge to the status quo that a lot of professional translators see in Machine Translation.
Which leads me to the bringing together of this idea with that of the hive mind that comes about when you have an interconnected system like the internet – the R2D2 Translator.
