Rescuing Australian Indigenous Languages

ABC News Radio is reporting on a three year project to rescue lost indigenous languages (mp3).

By going through the manuscripts available – journals and diaries of station masters and the like, they will be looking largely for pronouns – place and animal names. It’s an Australia wide project, and they have no idea how many languages or dialects they will be able to uncover, and are excited to be able show diversity and vitality of indigenous languages.

It will be a three phase study, initially uncovering and investigating the words, followed by digitisation of the terms via current locals to the area in question and finally an educative project.
